Here you see 3 examples with the same vectorizer preset, but modifying the size of the source.

  • Are you making the source image successively smaller for the 3 examples?

    With the same canvas size.

Or are you adjusting the canvas size?

    ...

Your post brings up something really interesting which we have been discussing here at Synthetik. Regarding how to work with vector effects.

Because many people dump in a huge resolution source image and/or are working with a huge resolution canvas, when in reality they might be better off working with a much smaller canvas for the particular effect they are trying to achieve.

In Studio Artist as it works today, when you run something like the vectorizer, your source image is automatically resized behind the scenes using whatever your current Canvas : Default Interpolation is set to, to be the size of the current canvas, and then the effect (the vectorizer in this particular case) is run on that virtual resized source image. Depending on the effect you are working with and the specific sizes of the source and canvas , this can potentially influence the visual look of the final effect quite a bit.

We've been discussing ways to make this kind of thing more user adjustable in V5. Which would give you access to an even greater range of potential effects. But at the cost of more esoteric controls to fiddle with in these kinds of effects.

  • The original source was a 600/600 picture. SO I opened it in the canvas with 3 different sizes. I used the sketch 12 preset.

  • Yes that means that a vectorizer preset is not something definitive. When you create a vectorizer preset, you create it with a certain size source, and if you change your source, with another size, you won't find the result that you had initially….

Like a source size control adjustment in the vectorizer editor ? range setup...

  • Yes, something like that where you could set the size the vectorization actually occurs at, and then the vectors generated at that size would then be automatically adjusted up or down to match the actual canvas size.

The way to do it now is to output your vectorizer effect with a given canvas size optimal for the particular effect you are looking for as a svg or eps vector file.

You can then rasterize that to any raster image size you want by using the appropriate software that reads the vector file format and then rasterizes it. So you could use Photoshop to open an eps vector file and rasterize it to any size you want. Studio Artist 5 lets you do this with svg vector files using a new Import SVG to Canvas option.

  • I agree with Bernard, size control adjustment /range setup would be ideal
