Paul, you could use photo-lithography to transfer a digital image to a copper plate.

yes, as john says the old half-tone photoengraving-technique (héliogravure)is still in use as a manual, artistic method. you need a one to one diapositive of your image to exposure direct or indirect onto the plate.
In the process of looking into this I discovered a process and imagery that are incredible: Bromoil Prints
