Background Texure tracking in Region Fill as Brush

I'm seeking a way to have the background texture track my brush path when painting in Region Fill as Brush mode (in SA version 3.5). I've tried combinations in the Background Texture panel that track the path in Region Draw mode as it fills the region, and of course in other pen modes too. Ideally I'd like to achieve this with the Region as Brush Mode Generator set to Stylized Region Stroke for the look I'm pursuing. Is background texture tracking available in Region Fill as Brush mode?

  • The issue is that with region fill as brush pen mode the entire region is filled in as one operation, as opposed to laying down a series of brush nibs over time along the path like in normal painting. So there's not really a path to track, the texture is just generated based on one angle.

There is a Stylize Effect in the Path Shape control panel. So you might be able to derive something using interactive pen mode that has the stroke shape you are going for and uses the normal nib generation process so the background texture can track the path over time.
    • Is that Stylize Effect in the Path Shape control panel in v3.5? I don't see it there.
      • That's a new version 4 feature.

In 3.5 you could try building bezier paths, then run a path operation to simplify them, then paint in the simplified paths.
        • Thanks John. I've been trying the bezier path thing, sorta running in wide circles around what i have in mind. Back to the drawing board though.
This area of SA3.5 (region fills) is revealing itself to be much deeper than I first thought, and in new combinations between the Paint Fill Setup/Load/Background Textures really interesting possibilities are turning up.
          • Version 4 lets you paint with hybrid region fills, which is another new v4 feature. So the region could be filled and then the outline of the region stroked in as a part of the fill operation. You can do some cool things with this. Say you want to simulate a watercolor fill. The region fill could be a vector fill operation, and then the outline stroke could be a smear water raster paint.
            • A curious thing I've noticed when using Region Fill as Brush mode with Generator/ Centered Stroke - with Brush Shape set to Line and Brush Modulation set to None - - when using autodraw the line is one size, when mouse drawing the line is another size, and when using cmd-K to paint the paths it is another size (more accurately, width)....why would this be and is there a way to control or modify these sizes? (I'm still with v3.5)
....and with the right blend mode settings these lines are very nice....

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor
