The source folder corresponds to the folder used for scanning source images to be processed by gallery show.
The process folder is very different. It's another potential repository for preset files that you want to use within a cycle of gallery show processing.
Gallery show processing consists of a potential start cycle option, the gallery show main technique, and a potential end cycle option. They run in sequence (start cycle processing, main technique processing, end cycle processing).
The user selectable process folder could be used in any of the 3 gallery show processing components (start cycle, main technique, end cycle). Depending on how you configure the gallery show settings.
In version 4, you had the start cycle option, and the main technique. Version 5 added the end cycle option, which greatly expands the potential kinds of configurable dynamic effects you can build using gallery show processing. In V5, you could work with 2 different sets of presets by combining the current main technique setting with something like a current favorites folder for the start cycle. Because V5 has a start and end cycle, we thought that adding another potential folder for user configurable presets would be useful. By using the current favorites folder, and the process folder, you can have 2 sets of independent configurable preset collections being used for start and end cycle processing, while still using something different for the main technique processing.
A simple example of end processing might be one or more 'finishing' paseq presets in a folder that you load as the current process folder. A simple example of start cycle processing might be erasing the canvas. So you could configure a gallery show cycle process that erases the canvas, generates a randomized paint preset that paints a random source image (from the source folder), and then optimizes the painting using a finishing preset in the process folder.
A more complex example would be selecting 3 different folders of presets that work together to build a configurable dynamic effect process (start cycle, main technique, end cycle). By randomly selecting individual presets from the 3 different source folders, gallery show could generate an endless variety of different one time effect processes as it runs through different gallery show cycles over time.
