Loops, loops, layered loops

Kawehi recently appeared in my world, and even if her music is millions of miles from my usual fare, I am really taken by it. Have a look/listen here

More here.

I'd love to be able to create (visual) loops like hers in real-time (I do that often in studio work), but I don't want to go the MAX/MSP way, I would like to have a much simpler way to do that. I have often created in SA videos to be looped, but short of doing them before a show and saving them to disks, playing them back during the show in the GL Mixer and/or from DVDs on DVD players and/or QT movies on a variety of Macs, mixing the streams with my Edirol V-4, I don't know what else I could do.

Ideally, I would create the loops in real-time and have then playing right then, a lot like "Run Loop Action" works now, but applying to running looping movies, not "just" action steps (which is great already as is).

I am taking a look right now at PixelConduit which may help me get closer to what I am trying to do, but I wondered if there already is, or could be, "something" in SA that could go that way?

By the way John, I understand Kawehi is from Hawaii (she lives on the mainland now), am hopping the bad weather coming your way does not cause too much dammage.

  • Do you want to run pre-rendered movie loops?

Or do you want to run live effects running in Studio Artist that could be run as looping effects?

You could build paint presets using movie brushes to do the first one. You might have some playback speed issues doing it that way, would need to experiment with it to see.

For the second option, you could use things like MSG to build effects that self-animate using temporal generators attached to individual parameters in the MSG processors. You can also use things like pen modulation as temporal generator modulators in addition to self running oscillators. So maybe you already have the tools to do what you want to in V4.

I'll take a look at her work and think about it some more after watching it all.

You can loop the PASeq timeline in V5, so you could keyframe PASeq presets, then turn that on, and build animating effects that way that loop. And you could use the existing key commands to switch between favorites presets on the fly to move around between them in real time.

    • V5 sounds very good, what you say about it makes me want to have it "yesterday." ;-)

But to answer your first question: I already run pre-rendered movie loops, outside of SA, or in SA as plain movie source.

I'd love to be able to create them live in SA then loop and modify them, live as well.

And for the second question, yes, I'd like to be able to run live effects in SA that could be running as looping effects.

I have done practically nothing with MSG as I really want/need to have everything go through hand gestures, and I have yet to experiment with movie brushes (that may be one interesting option to explore right now, if tutorials are available, I'll look for them).

Kawehi uses Ableton Live (there are a couple of her videos on the Ableton site, here) and a bunch of hardware solutions, and uses them all extremely well (I hope you can watch her videos, some are really spectacular).

By the way, as we are talking about loops, I haven't forgotten your old drummer. ;-)

I do much work in live performances with folders of presets favorites, bringing them into action with the keyboard (F keys), making sure each favorites folder has presets names starting with "01, 02, etc." and switch folders from the keyboard as well.

Works great with running timelines and source movies, but only as action steps in a timeline, which is probably a far cry from what I think I understand what looping a PASeq timeline in V5 could be like.

      Thanks

      • We're looking into making Studio Artist work with Ableton Live in the future. I use it extensively for music composition, as do quite a few of our customers. So that topic has been discussed here quite a bit.

If anyone has any thoughts on what that would mean to them personally, feel free to speak up. As always, feedback on how people might envision using Studio Artist in the future is always useful to us as we try to figure that out and make it happen here.

        • So if you already work with Ableton Live, you know firsthand what I would like to do with visual material.

I am seeing, day-in, day-out, how some fairly simple source material can help create fairly complex results when the source is folded onto itself, time-remapping enters the game, layering plays in it too, and so on.

Right now, I can do much of that with material created outside of SA which I manipulate in FCP X, the GL Mixer and such. However, I suspect there are ways to do much of it now, or in V5, in SA.

Ideally, the processes would have to be/remain simple, intuitive, or I will find myself losing interest, turning to other ways to do whatever I feel needs to be done. Probably asking too much, but I painfully know when my limits are when it comes time to deal with the "plumping" of digital art.

Is anybody making a copy of all the material in the Tutorials Forum

Since the Forum is going away in June, has anyone started to make a copy of all the stuff in the Tutorials forum?I've made copies of some of the tutorial material on the main site, but haven't looked at the Tutorial Forum yet.I'm going to continue copying as much as I can for my own personal use anyway, but if anyone else is doing it, or has already started doing it, please let me know.Maybe we can co-ordinate our efforts. ps can't ..... believe John, would let this happen without so much as a…

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor
