Text brush

Hi John,

I'm hand drawing using the attached paint preset. Need advise with 3 things

  1. how to tell SA not to overlap symbols when drawing over
  2. how to make sure there's a minimal distance between symbols
  3. how to draw from the center of symbol rather than bottom left corner

Thanks in advance

  • Studio Artist lays down a series of individual paint nibs (think blob of paint) along a path. Text characters are just paint nibs that are individual text characters. The distance between nibs is set by the Spacing parameter in the Path Application control panel.

    ...

The Size Option parameter in the path Application control panel determines how the Spacing is computed. So when working with text, typically you want to set it to Text Width Current ( as opposed to the  normal Current spacing). That way the spacing with be computed based on the text width as opposed to the width of the source brush image buffer the text nib is generated in.

    ...

If you want to offset painting from the path with some kind of a fixed offset, you can use the Fixed option for Displace in the Path Randomization control panel. Most Displace options lead to a random path displacement. The Fixed option allows for a fixed displacement. So it you do't like the positioning of the text font in relation to the path for text drawing, you could use a Fixed Displacement to offset it appropriately (relative to the drawing path).

    ...

I noticed the paint preset you posted is designed to only paint on a black background. I wanted to mention this in case someone else download it and wonders what is going on with it.

  • thanks John,

it looks my questions weren't very clear.

I'm drawing with wacom pen/tablet, so more pressure generates larger paint nibs.

after applying a stroke I need to make sure symbols from the next stroke do not overlap with nibs from the previos stroke.

    how do I achieve that?

    • It sounds like that's a function of how you manually paint your strokes. If you overdraw on top of previously painted areas of the canvas the text will overdraw. It just follows the path, it doesn't take anything previously drawn into consideration.

      ...

There are other approaches to building text drawing. You can use region draw pen mode to build an area fill that is composed or regular spaced paths, or region fill as brush pen mode with a text background texture to fill in an area with a block of text.

I've attached the Specialty : Text Brush category as a zip compressed preset folder in case you are missing those presets. The Test Rect Region, Text Backgrounder, and Text Region Example1 paint presets in that Text Brush category show off some of these alternative approaches.

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor
