Tutorial on matching canvas sizes output

I have numerous MSG presets wherein the output on different size canvases is very different. One recently (an MSG preset inside a Dual Mode preset) had the imagery I wanted when using an HD size canvas, but at 4K, it was totally different. Is there some way to generalize matching the output of a preset at different canvas sizes, or is that a preset by preset issue?  The preset in question is attached - the 4K render takes almost a minute to begin to appear on my screen ( 2016 iMac).

  • It depends on what specific processors are used in the MSG preset. Some MSG effects are resolution independent. But others are not. So it has to be evaluated on a preset by preset basis. The single 3CKaleido processor in that dual mode preset should be essentially resolution independent.

In your particular case, i think the issue may be the difference in how things look has to do with the dual mode timing effect on the smaller canvas size vs the larger one. so way more paint draws on the smaller canvas as opposed to the larger one.

I just tried some experiments using a 5120x2880 canvas size. it runs reasonably fast on my imac ( i don't have to wait a minute). but i have to boost the timing considerably to really see the effect of the painting like you would on a smaller canvas size. if you use the original timing it will take forever before you see anything if you start with a blank canvas, but again that is because very little painting takes place with the original fast timing before the second op is run.

    • OK, thanks, John, but the images themselves also look very different at 4K - I get those very thin lines that look like scratches at 4 K that I do not see at HD, and the canvas itself is much darker for all the frames at 4K. And where are you boosting the timing? I had to slow down/throttle the screen draws initially for the HD version but I disabled that. How are you boosting the timing?

      • The first editable parameter in the DualMode Paint Editor is Timing. I had to make it much bigger to slow down the time before the dual op runs. so that more paint would draw before it was run.

The paint is drawing very fine vector lines. So as the canvas gets bigger, those paint lines are going to look different then they do on a smaller canvas. It also takes longer on the larger canvas before the particles really start splitting off if you are using auto-draw as opposed to mouse drawing.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the MSG processor's Angle, H Center, and V Center is tied to the pen vertical and horizontal position. So if you didn't use the mouse the same way you did on the small canvas after you resized the canvas the kaleido effect running could potentially be very different then what you saw on the smaller canvas. Are you using auto-draw or working with the pen or mouse manually?

Keep in mind that the circle being drawn by the paint synth should probably be scaled up as you scale up the canvas if you want the relative sizing of that in relation to the overall canvas to be similar. You could set that by increasing the mac path length in the path shape control panel.

        • OK - made the changes in the timing and circle/path size and much improved, though the frames are still much darker under the 4K canvas - cannot think of a specific "brightness" control without some post processing (anything come to mind?) I was using the mouse to set the start position at various points on the screen to, in effect, "perform"/art direct the animation- easy to do and predict at HD, which is near-real time, but much harder to do at 4K for obvious reasons. If you can think of any other tweaks to get closer to the color and actual imagery of the HD version, do let me know. And thanks for the assistance.

Is anybody making a copy of all the material in the Tutorials Forum

Since the Forum is going away in June, has anyone started to make a copy of all the stuff in the Tutorials forum?I've made copies of some of the tutorial material on the main site, but haven't looked at the Tutorial Forum yet.I'm going to continue copying as much as I can for my own personal use anyway, but if anyone else is doing it, or has already started doing it, please let me know.Maybe we can co-ordinate our efforts. ps can't ..... believe John, would let this happen without so much as a…

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor
