I've been playing around with ideas for simulating energy sketches where the pen never leaves the paper once the sketch is started. The drawing in this is all vector drawing in the v4 paint synthesizer, so the sketch output could scale to any resolution. I'm using a combination of an edge ip op driving a msg preset for part of the sketch and then using multiple applications of the new path menu command options like 'connect if close' and 'connect closest' on the bezier path frame prior to painting it with the paint synthesizer vector paint preset.

I like your video example but you'd almost want to run the sketch algorithm on a 3D object or depth map and then rotate the 3D sketch or move the virtual camera around the 3D sketch for the particular effect you're looking for.
Extending the bezier path code to allow for 3D bezier paths is something that's been on the 'would be a cool feature' list for a while now.
