Resizable Layers-- request for input

Ok so back in v3 of SA it was possible to have layers of different sizes. This allowed for some very neat compositing and collaging to be done. I even posted a tutorial showing one way to use this feature. link

We lost this because of some changes made not by SA but by Apple. I have been asking for John to find a way to bring back this feature. He has been thinking about it.

from John: i did just want to point out that i've been thinking about it. This morning in fact. But in the context of how we could add new features to get you want you want to do with that feature without necessarily doing it in a Photoshop Layer kind of way. Doing it a different way then it's been done in the past in other programs.

So this discussion is to provide John with some ideas about what we users would like to be able to do rather than how the program might do it.

I will start off--

The primary use that I have in mind truly involves resizable elements. In v3 I used the layer approach because it kept the element separate form the "background." I could have SA paint a waterscape, then load a new source of a ship render that to a new layer, the resize and position that layer (and thus the ship) to then composite it with the first layer.

Similarly, I could use a second layer to scale an element of the scene and cut and paste just that scaled/warped element back into the first layer.

Another use that I have made of the ability to have different size layers is to render the same scene at different resolutions and use the bits that I liked or to overlay them for effect- these things now require an exit of the program after saving various versions of the work.

I believe that a custom brush feature that would pick up a selection and auto convert that selection into a sticker (see previous discussion about stickers) would do most of what I am missing with independently sized layers ::

how about the rest of you what would you do (like to accomplish) with a feature like independently sizable layers?

  • here are some examples of what I would do with the capability described above:

    • Any one else? Bernard, David, Scott, Craig: what would you like to be able to do with resizeable elements?

      • Superbe !

I first have to read lasts discussions :-)

I do many things at the same time...3D printing, SA, learning a new incredible soft - Motion Artist ! I wish I had 48 hours in a day :-)
