To Datamosh and beyond?

I expect most of you know what i'm refering to wit this effect. It's a glitching with codecs like h264 where the the last frame of a previous clip gets frozen and used as a colur pallete for the next. It's been exploited numerous times in edgy rap videos etc.

StudioArtist seems ideal for making similar effects, given it's high levels of pixel manipulation controls.

Expt 1
What i'm trying out for a start is using two layers - Layer 1 (topmost) has a still image. Layer 2 has a video.

On Canvas/Layer 1 let's say i'm applying the Displace image effect to the still image and i want to animate it over time.
In the displace editor panel i choose "IP Source manages angle and amt" and i select Layer 2 (the video) as IP Source.

What i'm expecting is some trace of the video to be visibly shoving the still image around when i click Animate.

There is much (beautiful) confusion but no evident print of the video coming through.

Other problems are: losing the player controls when switching between layers. Movie Layer menu is greyed out and i can't find how to ungrey it.
Its a shame because i feel i'm getting close.

Any ideas?

  • Here are a coupe of links to tutorials for 2-layer brush modulation, the first link is about is how to generate a simple black and white gradient animation and the second one is about how to use that black and white gradient animation to using Bus 1 in the Path Angle panel to modulate a paint synth paramater that is painting on another layer, I know it's not exactly what you are asking about but it might give you some ideas to play with. I want to revisit this techinque and explore it more also, I did get some cool results from playing around with these tutorials:

These are sequential tutorials, the first link informs the tutorial at the second link:

    • Here is a video I made last night using that 2 layer technique in those first two tutorial links that I posted, with a few tweaks, using a Movie Brush I made with one of my 3D animated characters: This was made to test a technique of modifying "paint" (actually a "movie brush" of my character "Pee-Paw") using Bus Modulation (with a simple circular black and white animated gradient on layer 2), along with MSG Path Start Generation in Synthetik Studio Artist. The hidden circular black and white gradient on layer 2 is modulating the size and rotation of the "Pee-Paw" animations, and the locations of the "Pee-Paw" animations are determined by the path points generated by the MSG Processor (a modified "Rose Curve" MSG, with temporal generators activated) that is embedded within the "Pee-Paw paint brush". • Here is a short example of what I did to try to replicate what I understand you to be trying to do in your original post...

      1. First I made an animated greyscale MSG movie (MSG used to generate that movie is attached here in a zip, along with the Displacement Image Operation I used for this process). I made a movie that is 300 frames long.

      2. I erased whatever Paint Action Sequence was in the PASeq timeline, and made sure that, in the PASeq editor, "Layer Playback" and "View Playback" are turned ON! (I just generally turn all the options on)

      3. I opened a static image in Layer 1, and used the Action > PASeq Timeline > Record Context > Content command to associate that still image with Layer 1.

      4. I clicked on Layer 2, and then opened up the movie I made with the MSG that has the animated greyscale shape on it. I used the same process of the Action > PASeq Timeline > Record Context > Content command to associate that animation with Layer 2.

      5. I then went to the Displacement Image Operation and changed a few settings from the default (see the Displacement Image Operation preset I made in attached zip file) and ran that Displacement Image Operation. I ALSO ANIMATED the "Amount" and "Angle" parameters (from smaller to larger numbers) over time in the Paint Action Sequence timeline, using the "Sequential Keyframe" (SeqKF) checkbox, when appropriate. Make sure to uncheck the SeqKF checkbox when you aren't trying to set a Sequential Keyframe!

      5. I went to File > Stream > Flags > and checked Enable Write on PASeq Cycle

      6. I went to File > Stream > New Movie Stream (you could also do New Image Stream if you want a set of sequentially numbered images instead of a movie file as the result)

      7. I then hit the "Animate" button in the PASeq timeline (which I had set to have 300 frames).

      8. When the process is done with the 300 (or whatever number) frames, go back to File > Stream > Close Open Stream.

I hope this helped! Please see attached movie example and the zip file with the MSG and Displacement Image Operation

  • Thanks for this i'll give it a go :)

I saw this today - it's After Effects but the the effect is exactly what i'm looking for, it's so close to a SA Displacement but coating the original video. The masking in SA is very powerful so who knows?

Is anybody making a copy of all the material in the Tutorials Forum

Since the Forum is going away in June, has anyone started to make a copy of all the stuff in the Tutorials forum?I've made copies of some of the tutorial material on the main site, but haven't looked at the Tutorial Forum yet.I'm going to continue copying as much as I can for my own personal use anyway, but if anyone else is doing it, or has already started doing it, please let me know.Maybe we can co-ordinate our efforts. ps can't ..... believe John, would let this happen without so much as a…

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor
