canvas textures

Hello, you all must please excuse my ignorance here.  I just bought Studio Artist two days ago, and all I have been able to do with it is the automatic painting. Wow, what a learning curve ahead of me!

I am looking for canvas textures to apply after I have painted one of my photographs.  I sent an email asking about availability of these before I even bought the program, and was assured it was being worked on, or they were available.  These textures are very important to me and one of the main reasons I bought Studio Artist.

This is what Sean Bryden wrote:

Hi,

I would like to add that we are about to release a new trial and with that are a lot of canvas textures in the MSG presets that do not wash out the image. You can get the presets herehttps://studioartist.ning.com/group/coolpresetsharinggroup?page=-1 Just scroll down to the bottom comments to Canvas-Paper-Linen-Textures.zip

He sent me detailed instructions on where to install them once I got them downloaded.  I never found the texture zip file.  I scrolled down from the link and never saw anything. (am I blind? lol)  I did see the Christmas zip file one of you offered and downloaded it, but when it came to installing it, I made it as far as the Evolution Editor, but couldn't figure out what to do then. Drag the folder into Evolution Editor?  Sean said something about the path being, Studio Artist>MSG>Open Evolution Editor to Make Your Own>pull down and put them in this folder.  I tried that and the Christmas folder disappeared.

Boy, am I ever lost.  Can't find the texture folder, and can't figure out how to install it once I find it!

  • Since this seems to be a topic of continued interest to users, we added some additional features to the paint synthesizer for the next Studio Artist release that make it easier to generate canvas lighting effects directly in the paint synthesizer. The existing Paint Brush Load Lighting functions were originally designed to build impasto or lighted textured paint effects into a dab of paint that is then applied to the canvas with a brush. With the new features we added to the paint synthesizer code for the next release, you can also use the Paint Brush Load Lighting features to just add lighting effects to the existing canvas (as opposed to a dab of colored paint that is then applied to the canvas).

    ...

The Gradient Lighting image operation effect already gives you a lot of control over creating all kinds of different 3D lighting effects that can be applied to the full canvas, including simulating the effect of a lighted canvas or paper surface. MSG or the Texture Synthesizer are other approaches you can use today to build these kinds of effects. The new features i just discussed will let you build those same kinds of effects easily in the paint synthesizer.

There are all kinds of existing ways to simulate the look of painting on a textured canvas using the paint synthesizer today. LiveArt's paint presets posted in this discusion show off some of those approaches. What i'm referring to is just another new option we added that will be available in the future.

    • I think I will put all of this to bed for now.  I'm reading all the posts, following the links, and just don't understand enough about the program to get the downloads into my Favorites folder.  I have two folders on my desktop. I have dragged one into Favorites, and it is not showing up.  I've turned off the program and turned it back on again and still can't find the textures.

I'm going to drag the other one, which is the brushes with texture, into Favorites in a few minutes, but if and when that doesn't work (bad outlook, huh? I'm just frustrated) I'll just wait until I've worked in Studio Artist for a longer time and know more about what I'm doing.  Right now, it's like the lights are out and I'm feeling my way through a dark room, lol!  Bless you all for going the extra mile trying to help me with this.

    • I have to sing the praises of Candice, who sent me a step-by-step "how to" install the textures in my favorites. A late operation in the dark of night last night!  It went successfully. Thank you, Candice.  I'm so excited, since there are many wonderful textures in this download.

I understand now what went wrong with my first attempts.

    • So glad you got them to work.  Love to see what you do with them!

      Aloha,

      Candice

  • Hi Betty,

I sent you a private email with the instructions and the .zip file but I am going to post it again here.  As well as a screen shot on where to put the presets

    • I have posted these before, but as a way of herding like topics together: attached are a set of presets -- PAINT PRESETS, not MSG or PASeqs, which paint with textured backgrounds. These were posted in 2009 as a starter set for exploration ( I think that most still work, no guarantees extended). The method is to put a texture into the paint fill panel of the preset. (relevant forum post here).

This is a very different approach. I truly believe that the most interesting results will come from a hybrid or combination of approaches.

Explore have fun. Paint with texture, then raise that further with an imop, then lay a MSG texture over that. Get some VARIETY in the high and low frequency bands and you will have a much more pleasing image than if you just slap a texture on a photo

    • Thank you all for the help.  I admit I know my way around photoshop, but Studio Artist is a whole new ball game. I downloaded the textures, Candice. Thank you!  I dragged and dropped them (I thought) into my Favorites folder, but they never showed up.

I just downloaded them again, and dragged them into the Studio Artist alias on my desktop. Hope that works. It's funny, but when I installed Studio Artist, I never got an icon.  I've had to go into Finder, locate the program and open it from there.  I created an alias since then.  I haven't gone yet to find the textures, wish me luck!  I'm not good at this sort of thing.  I have more of an artistic bent, not technical.

I already love this place.  So many nice, helpful people!

    • If you add a new folder of presets to Favorites while Studio Artist is running, it won't show up as a new Favorites category until the next time you start up Studio Artist.

    • or if you add one, you just click on the favorite list, choose another category, and click one more time and the new folder will be there without restart...

  • The MSG presets Sean referred to were posted by Candice Pacheco in the preset sharing group yesterday. The comment wall part of the preset sharing group can be a little difficult to find things in, since the most recent posts are placed at the end of the list of comments. Candice posted a cleaned up version of those MSG presets in a separate comment below for you this morning.

    ...

    Those presets are MSG presets.

    ...

You have several different options for using presets downloaded from the internet in studio artist. You could either place the folder of MSG presets you downloaded in the appropriate place in the Preset folder inside of your main Studio Artist folder so that they appeared as a new MSG category in an existing MSG collection. Or you could drop them in Preset/Favorites so that they showed up as a new favorites category.

    ...

You can also drag and drop a preset file onto the studio artist icon in the mac dock and studio artist will open a preset file. Or you can use the appropriate File : Import menu command to open a specific preset file.

    ...

How the Preset folder is organized is fairly straightforward once you understand it, but can be a little confusing when you are first getting started. We have posted some tutorial videos about how Presets work, and how the Preset folder is organized. There are also tutorial tip posts on Preset folder organization and making custom favorites folders.

I believe Peter also pointed you at some other information resources on generating canvas textures in your help desk post.

Here's a Studio Artist Effects Blog post on simulating a simple canvas texture.

And we collected a number of previous forum posts on applying textures to painted canvases in this recent tutorial post.
