Another experiment with using a movie background texture to provide texturing to a flat color paint preset.

  • I like it John. I only thought of the movie brush as square picture frames painting the page and have never used one. What was the process here? Mucho coolo.
  • You can use a quicktime movie as a movie source brush or a movie background texture. In this particular case i'm using a movie background texture. So anything that can be modulated with the background texture generator in the paint synthesizer can be modulated with the individual frames in the movie file.

A movie source brush doesn't have to be square or rectangular picture frames. If the movie file has an embedded alpha channel then you can use that as the source brush for defining the paint nib and the RGB movie pixels for painting in the brush nib. Here's an example of using a movie source brush with embedded alpha to define the brush shape.
  • I also wanted to point out that you can use a movie background texture to build a 3d stack of textures that can be used to represent luminance from 0 to 255. Think of it as a stack of hatching patterns. The pixel indexed movie background texture is the one you use for this kind of thing. So you could build a set of custom hatching patterns to represent luminance in a sketch and then store the set of hatching patterns in a movie file and then use that movie file as a pixel indexed movie background texture to automatically draw with your custom hatching patterns. Here's a tutorial post that discusses this in more detail.
