A question about layers and a suggestion

First the question: is there a way to change what layer a step in a PASeq affects once its been recorded into the PASeq editor?

I've been working on a multi layered animation which uses a hidden layer to store a selection in, a background layer and a third layer I call a "comp" layer which is what I do my painting, vectorizer, image operations and adjustments to.  I label each layer and include their layer order in their naming convention.

In a recent project I was working on, I needed to add a layer to a PASeq that already had two layers attached to it.  I'd named them layer 1 & layer 2 and ran a MSG preset on layer two but then remembered I needed to include a mask layer.  Once I did so, I found that I couldn't change the layer the MSG was affecting without deleting it in the PASeq and running the MSG preset again with a new target layer selected.

That strikes me as a little odd as I'm able to change the name and toggle a layer on and off in the PASeq editor.  Am I missing something in the documentation?

As far as the suggestion, I'd love to see a highlight bar that goes across the Action step name and continues into the keyframe panel.  I don't get lost too often when editing keyframes, but when I do, its a painful process.

  • Yes, there is a way to change what layer a step in a PASeq affects.

First, run the action step. Then change the layer to what you want it to be. Then control click on the associated action step (that would be a right click on windows) to bring up the context menus associated with that action step, and run the one that says 'Interface to Action Step'.

This will update the recorded action step to use any changes you made to any of the associated interface controls for the action step (remember PASeqs work like snapshot recording if you are familiar with audio mixer automation) as well as the layer information.

2472643572?profile=originalThere is currently a cosmetic bug where the Layer indicator for that action step will not show the layer change you just made, but if you export the PASeq and then import it again you will see that the change has occurred.

As always, you need to make sure you have the Layer PLayback paramter turned on in the Editor control panel for the PASeq (as shown below).

  • Do you just want color highlighting for individual PASeq action steps as a way to visually organize?  We don't have that now by i can put it on a list of suggestions for things to potentially add in the future.

I agree you should probably just be able to edit the layer indicator directly in the list like you can for the name or the Status, but you need to use the more obscure method i posted right now to do it.

    • I would LOVE color highlighting added.  I think that the current interface is a nice improvement
over 3.5 but any additions that can help keep my layers and PASeq actions tidy and organized would be most welcomed by me.
