I'm trying to figure out how to configure a brush that affects only the alpha channel and acts as an alpha channel eraser, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Any suggestions?

Here are a few i had in my preset folder.
Remember you need to turn on the Enable for View and Paint Synth Alpha Enable menu flags in the Canvas : Alpha menu if you want to use these.
