If you select an object in a frame then it tries to track that object's location based on the statistics it computed from the original selection area you defined. It generates an optimal elliptical selection based on the initial statistics it computed.
It's kind of an experiment to be honest. Sometimes it works ok, sometimes it's not as smart as you would like. You can experiment with it by turning on the source onion skin in the canvas, record the cam track selection as an action step in a paseq, then hit animate and watch what it does with subsequent frames.
