Changing colors

I don't this is possible, but I'd like to be able to change colors from one color to another. As an example, say in a painting, the shadows are black and I would like them to be a dark blue...is there a way to do that?

  • You can of course use the color picker in the source area to pick specific colors for painting if you want to. So by working with manual painting, or by masking auto-painting to a specific area, you could use a specific chosen source color you picked for the painting in a given area.

You can also work with color palettes or color gradients for your color source.  The normal color palette mapping options in the source area will map the closest color in a palette to the source color it's trying to represent. And the color gradient mapping is based on the source luminance mapping into the index of the color gradient.

In the paint color source control panel, there are all kinds of different control sin the paint synthesizer that affect the coloring of paint generated from the source image.

You could also use something like the Color Palette Mapping image operation effect to palette map your source image prior to painting, then load the modified source as the new source image to use for painting. Again, you could use masking if you only want to affect specific areas of the image. Using the interactive adjust effects to shift hue or luminance might be effective if you only want to change the coloring of a specific masked area (like black shadow regions).

I forgot to mention the Selective Color map image operation effect. It's designed specifically to do what you want to do, map one color in an image into another color. You use the first 2 source color memories in the source area to control the color mapping. The first color memory gets set to the color in the image you want to change. The second source color memory gets set to the color you want to map the first color to. You can use the Tolerance and Transition controls to adjust the sensitivity of the color mapping. Not how i set it up to map the gray color background of the source image into a blue color, and the result of the mapping is seen in the canvas after running the effect.

      • I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I have everything the way you do in the picture. I hit run and nothing happens. For my first color I double clicked on the first color memory, and use the eye dropper to pick a color from the image. I chose a green from the grass. For the second color memory I use a bright red so I can see it is working. I click the run button and I get no change.

I have 10 for tolerance and transition. RGB for variation. 100 for Mix. IP Source is source image. And composite is Replace.

        • You can try increasing the Tolerance. You can also hold down the c key and click in the source image to sample the color you want to change, then option click the first color memory to record the sampled color. Also, remember not to confuse the current source color square with the first color memory (the color memories are the 3 smaller color squares).

          • Thank you.

            • I got it working. Thanks again.
