FCP X, Motion 5 & Studio Artist 4

I've done some animations in Studio Artist that I wanted to bring into Motion 5 and FCP X but the import dialogues for both apps aren't allowing this to happen.  In FCP X I get an alert that reads "No importable files.  None of the selected files or folders can be imported.  Change the selection and try again."

In Motion no dialogue appears.  The file simply does not import.

Interestingly enough, the files import into Compressor with no problems.  So my workflow has been to export out of Studio Artist and pull the clip into compressor to render out a ProRes friendly clip that I can then import into FCP X or motion.  (Alternatively, I have also exported out image sequences that I can then import into Motion and Compressor directly.)

I thought it might have been a problem with the frame rate being too slow so I rendered out 23.98 & 29.97 clips in Studio Artist. (FCP X doesn't play well with anything slower than 23.976 - it re-times and renders it out to conform in the time-er, storyline).

So anyone have an idea of what's going on?  Experienced similar problems?

  • What output codec are you using for your movie output from studio artist? We have people here using release version studio artist generated movie files in FPC X with no problems. You may need to explicitly add a .mov file extension, some of the newer apple programs no longer support resource fork ids for file type, even though they are supposed to.

We made a change recently to how we output quicktime movie files to make them easier to move cross platform (mac-windws). I believe that's in the 4.05 betas, so i'll send you a copy of that beta build to test out later today. I know one of our beta testers was having problems with Motion before, and that resolved the issue for her.

You can always import a movie into Quicktime Player Pro and then export it if you are having issues with a program importing any given quicktime file, and that export will resolve the issue with the movie file.

    • Hey John,

I've tried a few different codecs.  My base codec has been Animation but I tried spitting out ini ProRes422 as I know that's what Final Cut Pro X prefers to work in.  Neither worked.

I thought the problem might have been that the alpha was set to layer alpha as opposed to full on, but no love their either.  I'll try using the .mov trick and let you know what happens.

      • Well, the adding a .mov tag fixed the issue with directly importing into Premiere Pro, it didn't help as far as Motion and Final Cut Pro X though.  I think I'll try uninstalling and re-installing FCP X and see if that helps at all.
        • Chris, wait until i send you a 4.05 beta build later today. I want to build a new 4.05 beta before i send it out, since we've added a few changes since we sent out the last one to our testers.

Reinstalling FPC is just going to be a waster of time in my opinion.

          • Just sent you a new 4.05 beta build.
            • John.

I am having the same problem importing SA movie exports into FCP X.  May I also receive the new beta build which apparently overcomes the problem?  Thanks.

              • You should have been included in the last 4.05a7 mac beta email. If you need a windows build let me know.

          • The 4.05.a3 update did the trick!  Smooth import with no problems!  Thanks John!
            • Great.

Just to be clear, the issue was Apple software not supporting backwards compatibility with existing Apple Quicktime file format standards. Note that Quicktime Player opens and plays the movie files you had issues with without any problems. As does Studio Artist.

              • Is that the AV Foundation that folks have been talking about?
