First, Happy Holidays to all! Hope everyone is having a great end of the year!

And now yes, I'm hard at work on Christmas Eve doing hand drawn animation for a little project for my children (not a Christmas present, just something I've been meaning to do for some months now and it feels like this is a good time to sit down and spend the time required doing animation with Studio Artist again).

So... pardon if this question has an obvious answer, I've looked at the User Guide but I'm still not certain about how to do this. I was working on drawing a frame when Studio Artist suddenly crashed. I reopened it at the prompt it gave me after that, but even though I've tried to load what I was working on again onto the canvas so I can continue drawing, I can't seem to do it. I can see the file, it's a .mov file, and I can load it as a source and play it in the upper left hand corner of the screen - it saved up until the last frame I drew before the program crashed. So the file doesn't appear to be corrupted. But how do I get back to drawing in the next frame?...

Looking forward to your knowledgeable responses. :)

  • are you able to play it as a .mov file in QT?

  • Were you working on a movie layer?

If so, then you can just load the partially finished movie file back into a movie layer and continue working. Every time you write out a frame to a movie layer, it saves the frame info and then updates the movie file as well. So you won't lose anything when working that way if you do get a crash other than the current frame you were working on that you hadn't written out yet.

    • Yes - I was working on a movie layer. Thank you, John, I will give it a go and hope you are having a fantastic holiday/end of year celebration!

    • Here's some tips on working with movie layers.

When you are finished, it's always a good idea to save a flattened movie file as a new movie file. The movie layer overview tip discusses this briefly.

      • Thanks so much, John, this is very helpful!
