Help with selecting a computer to use?

Hi there,

I'm new, and would like to purchase studio artist sometime soon, but I am in the process of selling my computer, and am looking at new options and trying to determine what would be good to buy.

Ultimately I would like portability, and I use Mac. So I had my eye on the MacBook pros. And since my budget would be tops, $1550, I am looking at the 13 inch models.

I am just on the fence with their screens, as the non retina 13 inch cannot even get up to a 1080 resolution. And the retina one seems too high. Has SA modified itself to fit retina? Will it work well on a 13 inch MacBook screen? Does anyone have experience with it? And are the icons Waay too small? ;)

(I use glasses already, so it is a factor for me ;)

I'd appreciate any input you have, thank you so much!

  • Studio Artist 4 does not have any retina display specific features.

However, it's really not an issue. I use Studio Artist when traveling on a 13 inch power book pro with a retina display. It looks fine.

If you really focus on the icon buttons while in the 'Best (Retina)'display setting, you can see a small amount of pixelation associated with an image based icon button like the zoom in or zoom out buttons in the main control bar when you are in that display setting. But most of the Studio Artist interface is drawn with live rendered vector graphics.

However, i would suggest setting the display of your 13 inch power book pro to the 'More Space' setting, which is what i use. It gives you a much bigger workspace, which for me is really the whole point of the higher resolution display in the retina power books. You get a much larger workspace in Studio Artist when you do this, so for me it's a much more preferable way to work on a 13 inch retina powerbook pro.

There is an Interface Sizing preference option for macs in Studio Artist. It allows you to shrink down the sizing of some parts of the interface. With normal power books with more limited display resolution, you often want to use one of the reduced size options there to get more working space in the interface, especially in things like the Paint Action Sequence editor. But on a retina powerbook with the 'More Space' display setting, i would suggest leaving that Interface Sizing preference set to normal.

We are looking into providing some retina display specific features in future Studio Artist versions.

    • Hi,

Thank you very much for your reply. I just really need the MacBook Pro (that is the official name of it) to be more than 'fine'. This is for professional work, and this will be a work computer. The money I am spending n the retina and on top of that your software will also require the experience to be more than standard.

      The most important things for me are;

      1. That the icons won't be terribly tiny

2.That they won't be so fuzzy that I find it hard to distinguish (though it sounds by what you said that there are no issues with this)

      3. That it will show the correct resolutions so I can plan finished projects on it. I don't have a large iMac to finish the projects on.

I was in touch today with technical support, they told me they will perform a test on this matter on a MacBook Pro and let me know how it is. I will wait and see what they have to say.

I cannot take this matter too lightly as this will be a very expensive ordeal. I need to know how well it works. Any chance you can at least give an approximate date for the retina uodate release? It might just be better for me to wait for it to be optimized for the right display.

Thank you for your reply, I hope anyone else has used it on a MacBook Pro retina as well and can share specifics on the experience. I honestly never hear good reviews from people using a non retina software on a retina display. I need something to reassure me. I think the test, with specific description and perhaps screen shots, from technical support may be fine.

      • Even if there was specific support for retina displays in Studio Artist 4, I'd still run my 13 inch retina display MacBook Pro in 'More Space' display mode, as opposed to 'Best (Retina)'.

Because i would always want the bigger workspace you get in 'Mode Space' display mode. Which is closer to what you experience when working on a large imac display.

Obviously that's my opinion. But for me, getting a work experience that is closer to the larger view experience i get on my imac is way better then trying to duplicate a typical small view cramped portable computer display with sharper fonts displayed in the cramped view, which is what the 'Best (Retina)' display mode essentially gives you.

Are you going to be buying your new MacBook Pro just to run Studio Artist? Or are you getting a portable computer that you are going to be running other software on as well? If the answer is the second one, then i'd suggest purchasing your new MacBook Pro and then trying out the free Studio Artist trial.

What computer are you running now?

There are plenty of people running Studio Artist 4 on MacBook Pros doing professional work. I can make a few inquires and hopefully get someone other than me to post their opinion of using Studio Artist 4 on a MacBook Pro here for you.
