How to disable the strait edges around the picture

I would like to know how to disable the strait edges around the picture, when you use any type of preset.

In the picture below you can see the strait edges around the picture, I don’t want the strait edges, I want the rough edges you see, Like the strokes of the brush or presets, around the edges.

What settings do you have to change, to go from smooth edges to rough edges…?10145570061?profile=RESIZE_710x

  • Everything in Studio Artist is user re-configurable.  So you can edit any preset to change it if you want it to act differently.

What specific preset are you referring to?

Or are you talking about something coming out of Gallery Show?

In either case, it looks like you are using a border generation effect as the last part of the processing.  A lot of the border generation effect are built in the paint synthesizer.  So you could adjust the paint synthesizer settings in the Editor to make the brush rougher, change the coloring of the border, etc.

I was thinking about posting a little tutorial on border effects, so i can add some posts to this thread over the next few days that dive into that.

Just so we are clear about what you are specifically referring to, what preset are you talking about, or if you are using gallery show, how do you have it configured?  Not every preset in Studio Artist generates a border effect (the vast majority do not), so that part of your post is somewhat perplexing.  That is why i thought maybe you were referring to gallery show, since there are a few end cycle options there that produce border effects, and if you had one of those enabled, then you would always gen some kind of procedural border effect added to the gallery show processing for each gallery show cycle.

  • I looked at this again this morning, and was wondering if what you are actually talking about is adding an alpha matte to the canvas image?

Yes, images are rectangular, that is their nature, they are regular 2-D arrays of pixel data.

And yes, you can add alpha mattes to any canvas that would add a brushed on matted alpha off effect at the perimeter of the canvas rectangle.

Here's a tip on working with alpha in Studio Artist.

Here's a tip on working with layers in Studio Artist.

So you could modify one of the border effect paint presets to erase paint the alpha channel only instead of the RGB channels of the canvas.  You'd have to run that after running whatever preset you are using.  And then save the canvas to a PNG file while alpha view is enabled.

I can explain this in more detail if this is what you were actually asking about.

Working With Alpha Channels in Layers
Each layer in Studio Artist is composed of 3 RGB (red-green-blue) image channels and 1 alpha (A) channel. The RGB image channels define a color image…
  • Ok, lets try to break down what i think you are asking about.  Again, if i am mis-interpreting your question, feel free to provide some feedback, and i'll try to pivot my answer to cover what you are interested in.

There are a bunch of different Border Effect paint presets located in the Borders category in the Tools-Blurs-DodgeBrush-Smudge-More collection in the paint synthesizer presets.

I started with the Black-Simple paint preset, and did some quick manual editing in the paint synthesizer Editor to make a new BlackTextureBorder1 paint preset, which paints as shown below.

    10154790493?profile=RESIZE_930x

The original painting was done with the first PASeq preset that comes up in the factor PASeq presets (A Watercolor Blot Palletized).  After running that PASeq preset on the clown source image, i then ran my custom BlackTextureBorder1 paint preset to get the black textured border effect shown above.

The BlackTextureBorder1 paint preset i made above is painting black into the RGB channels of the current layer, and painting nothing into the alpha channel of the current layer.  My take on what you were asking in your original question is that you wanted to know how to paint the textured border in the alpha channel of the layer.

So i modified my BlackTextureBorder1 paint preset to paint the alpha channel black (black = full off for alpha). To do that, i made the following 2 changes to the paint preset in the paint synthesizer Editor.

First, i set the Blend to 0 in Paint Fill Apply control panel.

    10154800888?profile=RESIZE_400x

I did this because i don't want the paint preset to touch the RGB channels of the canvas.  I only want the alpha channel to be painted.

Second, i setup the Alpha Fill control panel as shown below.

    10154802059?profile=RESIZE_400x

I set this up so the alpha gets painted to Full Off.

I also had to setup some global Canvas : Alpha menu flags to enable alpha for view and to enable alpha painting in the paint synthesizer.  These are both off as the normal default settings.

    10154803661?profile=RESIZE_400x

I added my AlphaOffTextureBorder1 paint preset as the last action step in my PASeq.

    10154805067?profile=RESIZE_400x

You don't have to do this, you could just run the AlphaOffTextureBorder1 paint preset manually after running the original factory manually.

I ran the modified PASeq, then saved the canvas as a PNG image file.

If i then open it in Preview, you can see that the painted image as a fringe at the borders where the alpha channel has been matted out with the rough textured border effect.

    10154805896?profile=RESIZE_930x

So the visual appearance of this image no longer appears to be hard edged rectangular.  But of course it still is, images are always rectangular, the alpha mask is just hiding the rectangular shape from view, but all of those hidden pixels are still in the actual image.

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor
