I want to ask about canvas sizes.

The usual canvas size I use 4096 x 4096, Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop.

When I use the same canvas size Studio Artist 5, It came work with a few presets, but after a while.

Studio Artist 5 freezes and the program crashes.

I restrict the size to 2048 x 2048, at the momnment, so Studio Artist 5 wont crash.

I use: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bite, GTX 550 TI 3GB, 24 Gigs of ram.

What can I do to stop Studio Artist 5 from crashing.

On a separate note, when using a preset, Is there a way to have a seamless canvas

at the same time when using the preset?

Like If you offset the canvas In Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop, there would be no border edges.

  • Regarding seamless canvas.  If you are painting, you can turn on the Wrap Path At Edge parameter in the Path End control panel of the paint synthesizer. That will cause paint paths to wrap to the opposite side of the canvas when they leave the canvas boundary. It's useful if you want to make self tiling paint effects.

RE memory issues on windows. If you start a tech support ticket, we can interact with you directly to try to resolve any crash issues you may be running into. We are aware that some windows users of V5 seem to experience less virtual memory allocation than we would like to see in a 32 bit application. For some users (not all) it seems to be associated with anti-virus software they are running. It's something we're looking into. It's not an issue on the mac.

There are some things you can do to reduce memory consumption. You can set your undo store preference to disk rather than ram. And you can cut down the number of undos.

The source image also takes up memory. For many Studio Artist effects, you can use a smaller source image than the canvas you are working on.

If the particular effects you are using are vector based, then outputting resolution independent svg or eps files rather than raster images might be an alternative way to work.

    • How can I make the source image smaller than the canvas size?

      Thanks in advance.

      • The source image and the canvas are totally separate entities in Studio Artist. This is a very different approach than other programs like photoshop, where you open an image and then directly edit it. the source in Studio Artist is used like an artist uses a model, as an image to observe, analyze, and then re-interpret in the canvas area.

The source image will be whatever size in pixels it is. The canvas size is whatever you specify it to be in the resize dialog that comes up if you are using file : new source and canvas menu command, or canvas : resize canvas menu command.

If you want to make a smaller source than whatever size your existing source image is, just make a smaller copy of it. You could do that in studio artist by making a smaller canvas, dragging the source to the canvas, and then saving the smaller canvas image. or you could use photoshop, preview or some other image editing program to make a smaller pixel size copy.
