I'd like to be able to create a positionable b/w gradient brush or operation to erase the layers alpha much like the gradient tool in photoshop?
Ideally I wish to be able to drag the gradient or paint fill to control the desired falloff spot and gradient angle.
If these gradients could also contain an element of a defined noise all the better - but perhaps that may be better with an image op after the event
Any information on this and or painting in gradients as over layer paint would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks

I'm tying bw gradient msg's at the moment with composite set to replace region. Kinda sorta getting there but my knowledge of controlling the msg's is sketchy I've got some bw msg gradients up and rotating them with the r key but can't seem to adjust the falloff gradients with the h key for sizing.
What I have learned is msg's are a great way to effect alphas and selections. Oooooh nice.
All of the different operation modes have a standard set of Composite parameter options. One of them is called 'Replace Alpha', and another is called 'Replace Region Selection". So those 2 Composite options respectively route the effect output to the current layer's alpha channel or the current selection buffer.
There's a few interactive gradient options near the bottom of the interactive adjust effect options. We should probably directly drop what you want in there, so i'll add that to my 'to do'
You can use MSG to build practically any kind of gradient effect you could possibly want.
Thanks John. Brilliant.
Mark,
I found my explorations into this space. I was wanting to be able to create a gradient fill mask. The method I ended up using was not via the paint tool, but rather via the texture synth. There are in addition several very nice presets that adjust the mask under the ImOp's "OP specific" folder/menu. My texture solution is attached. You will want to modify it to act on the alpha layer (replace alpha) or selection. Using the Text Synth there are 5 panels. Spatial, Generator, Mapping, Effect, and Output. The Output panel is where you will make adjustments to have it modify the alpha, the Spatial panel is you can control the angle of the gradient.
I do believe that it is possible to create a paint preset that would drag draw a gradient across the whole canvas--of course one would have to size it for each canvas. John adding a gradient drag to the interactive adjusts would be a much sweeter solution.
As an aside, given what I have seen of your work, you are truly going to want to explore what is possible with the Text Synth module.

Just to be clear what the attached text synth actually does is a gradient fade- you will have to start with an alpha then you can fade it into a gradient fill. There is a lot of control over the amount of the fade the angle etc. I have it set @ 36% and 90 degrees. Start with a full on all screen alpha or region selection and hit the run button a few times and you will be able to see what is happening.
As usual is you generate any interesting/useful modifications to the preset please re-post them.
cheers
This is what I'd originally attempted with limited success - fumbling a wee bit with the best kind of brush setup to use.
I agree and with a facility for added noise in the gradient too.
Of course and many thanks again. I shall take a look at your preset this evening as I am sure to learn from a part of S.A I am not familiar with.
