Looking to mimic my own sketching style

I'm looking for a way to lessen opacity or intensity of strokes based on distance from detected edges in source image.  I'm also wanting to increase stroke/path randomization based on the same criteria.  I would most like to do this with an assisted mode preset.

How I personally sketch in reality is to use loose light strokes to lay out the general shapes... then use heavier strokes until I nail it down the final outline with heavier strokes.. When sketching in pencil anyhow. Tips or links to relate info appreciated. When actually drawing a finished piece it's a different story as outlines often look unnatural... depending on how close you want to get to reality. It all depends on desired outcome I suppose.

So bring on the tips or related information :)

Any pointers appreciated.

  • You can use texture of inverse texture as modulators to control blend or path length in auto draw interactive pen mode paint presets.

    • Thank you for the quick reply, I will play with those and see what kind of results I can get :)

      • You could also use anyone of a number of different Studio Artist ip op effects to generate an edge map off of the source image. You could then smooth filter that to spread out the edges to make a processed edge map image, which could then be loaded into another layer, and used with Bus Modulation in the paint synthesizer as a modulator for blend or path length.

Sometimes the texture modulators are a little too tight in their spatial localization in the image, so what i suggest above is a way to soften and spread that effect out over larger areas.

        • Yeah... having a little more luck with this approach.  Have you thought about possibly making modulators in the paint synth system for distance from edges as opposed to texture?  Texture is a cool modulator for brush size though.

        • It would also be sort of cool to be able to manually draw in guides... bezier curves or something meant to influence the direction of paths for strokes.  Sort of like how zbrush can use hand drawn guides to help with auto retopo algorithms.

          • We should probably provide some specific way to do it with bezier paths.

You can draw bezier paths and then expand them (Path : Bezier Layer Commands). So that would be a way to draw soem influence strokes and them expand them out with new strokes to fill the whole canvas

          • You could use Geodesic Falloff to generate an edge distance map, but it in a layer ,a and then use bus modulation.
