multiple canvases

John, is there any way to have multiple canvases open? Sort of like the idea of having a garbage track open to work out ideas while editing your main output track at the same time in FCP. I would have several garbage tracks open while working out ideas in FCP. If it can't I will figure something out. I just would like to have different ideas flowing while compositing the final result. This might be where nodal based workflow could come in. Look at Norrkross Software's Norrkross Movie.

  • You can have multiple layers. In view current layer mode you only see the current layer. You can also use the mute check boxes int he layer stack to turn off specific layers if you want to use them as working buffers. Using extra layers would be the equivalent of a garbage track in FCP.

You can also use session files to swamp between different studio artist sessions. the session file stores the complete layer stack, so this would be a way to switch back and forth between different projects.
    • John I will try the swap method tomorrow. If I can drag and drop different image comps between main and alternatives, so be it.

I guess is that I want to see all images in different stages of work. Like the stacks in lightroom or compare multiple images in lightroom.

will let you know of a method that works for me.

      • In v4 there is a layer command "current view as new layer" I use this quite often in a manner similar to what you are describing you would like to do. SA4 is essentially unlimited in the number of layers you can have though after 20 it gets a bit difficult to remember where one is.. I suggest naming the layers as you go.
        • I took the question differently. I thought Laurence was asking if it was possible to have multiple windows of the same project open as in Photoshop.
