NYT Article on Large Scale Printing

The New York Times posted an article today that runs through some inexpensive digital print output options available on the web.  Thought i'd post a link to it for anyone interested.  They mention some options for decal, vinyl, and wall paper printing options that could be cool for Studio Artist generated imagery. The article is available here.

  • A Studio Artist user in Hawaii was talking to me recently about using Costco for fine art printing. It's not something i would have initially considered, but he claims the quality of the prints are good and the cost is quite reasonable. Here's a link to a blog article that discusses color profile calibration for Costco printing.
    • He's right, 12x18's were going for 3.99 in San Diego. The quality was excellant on archival quality paper.
The only problem for me was 12x18 was the largest size they had.
      • He claimed they do larger print sizes. The Costco web site has prices for larger sizes when i checked it out the other day. I think you have the option of either having it done at your local Costco or you can order prints to be mailed to you and they are done at arbitrary service centers and then mailed to you.

It's interesting because i've been reading some other blog posts recently that basically say you're better off not buying a high quality printer at this point in time but just using service bureau printing because they can spend a lot more money on a high quality printer and offer lower per print prices than you are going to be able to put together on your own.
        • I came to the same conclusion five or so years ago after I discovered Costco.
My only issue with service bureaus is that when they ship large pieces they put them into tubes. When I tried to have them mounted onto foamcore the image "rippled". Canvas prints, on the other hand do not seem to exihibit this behavour
