Oversized files

I am trying to make a movie of about 26 minutes from a movie of 78 Mb. SA is crashing out as it reaches sizes of over 186 Gigabytes. Somehow this seems excessive. It is being rendered to a 5 terabyte HD but it seems that the SSD drive can't handle the size. Is it normal to expect such a large file from a 78 Mb source file of 960x600 rendered to 1920x 1200? IS there any way to make this work?

  • What quicktime compression codec are you using for your movie file output? You might want to try a different one with more compression in it.

Here's some info on prores codec.

Another alternative would be to output jpeg frame images, and then convert the folder of frame images to a movie file after the fact. Outputting a folder of frame images is useful if you are running into a crash situation, since a crash would prevent a quicktime movie file from being completed and you lose the work, while a crash during an image folder render leaves you with all of the rendered frames on disk prior to the crash.

    • How do I set SA to output jpegs?

      • You run the Action : Process with Paint Action Sequence : Movie to Image... menu command. When you run that menu command, you will select the movie file you want to process, setup the canvas size for the output, and then select an output folder for the numbered frames images that will be output. The image file format is specified in the main Preferences dialog in the Movie tab there. You set the Image File Format preference accordingly.

    • Thanks I didn't know about the codec settings. I have changed it to proRes 422. Also I changed the Photoshop output to jpeg.
