I didn't quite get what to do with memories up until SA 4, but now that I've incorporated them into my workflow, I find them to be very fast and very useful.

You can record, play, randomize, or random load a random paint preset using the associated command links in there. The path memories are also accessible near the bottom of this help page.
I think we're going to provide a preference selectable toolbar in the editor when in paint synthesizer operation mode that will have all of the old paint synth memory buttons available there. Not sure when this will be added but it's on the list of things we'd like to see added.
I used the memories via the help browser and they work better for me than the menu based memories. I'm excited to hear about the the work you're doing with preference selectable toolbars though. Looking forward to seeing them.
I have yet to experiment with customizing any features other than the workspace, but I will.
