Run loop action is awesome!

I don't know how I skipped over the 'run loop action' and I really don't know how I survived without it for so long but it is an absolute game changer for this Studio Artist user.

OMG, wow. holy crap, "!", and any other superlative I can think of don't quite do my excitement justice.

If you find yourself suffering through the tedium of tweaking and designing paint patches, MSG patches, and PASeqs and wish you had more feedback as to what the thing you're building is going to look like once its run, try engaging 'run loop action' from the 'action' menu.

  • Yes, loop action is one of the great new features in Studio Artist 4. For lot's of different reasons.

It's great for trying out different parameter changes and seeing how they affect painting in real time. This includes time particles in the paint synthesizer. We never really pushed time particles too much as a feature prior to version 4, because editing their behavior was kind of a conceptual exercise. But with loop action in version 4 you can adjust their behavior in real time as they paint.

There's also all kinds of different live performance things you can do with loop action. You can build live video synthesis effects, work with dual mode paint presets in real time, build live interactive animations you capture via movie streams, etc.

there is this really cool thing called "fire" and a nifty round thing called "wheel" too. ... Just in case you hadn't heard.

on a  more serious note if you are using the loop action to create paint patches, MSG or regular, be aware that there can be a lag while a cycle completes and that adjusting certain variables during this lag can create wonderful fantastic results that you will never be able to repeat.

    • I'm so ahead of you...I've got wheel and fire down.  I even learned about this stuff called 'sliced bread'.  I figure I might try it out with fire and see what comes of it.

      Fingers crossed!

  • yes.. loop action is invaluable when experimenting, playing and testing!
  • I know I already posted my exuberance on this but I can't help it.  I feel like I've been flying on standby all of this time just hoping for a flight back home and all of a sudden I've been upgraded to first class when I walk into the airport and get to go through the express line.  run loop action rocks!

Of course, my experience is augmented by the fact that I'm running on a new machine for the first time in my time with Studio Artist and I've got enough real estate to keep things moving quickly but still, this is awesome!

I'm playing around with multiple layers and alpha layers right now and the increase in the speed of trying out different configurations, different paint presets mixed in with different MSGs is stunning!  I'm in love all over again!

    • yes... having recently added a basic 13" MacBookPro to my lineup... I did some simple tests and it generally runs my typical SA paseq's 2-8 times faster than on my G5.  It gets to a point where testing in loop mode spits out canvas redraws so fast it starts to resemble (almost) real time playback.  It goes so fast I can actually get a feel for what the out video will look like.
