Scale a selection with its content

I do a selection of a part of my painting using the lasso-tool and move (hotkey m) this selection with its content to a new position on the canvas. I need a simple solution to uniform scale this new selection with its content. ThankYou

  • Agreed. Both r (rotate hotkey) and s (scale hotkey) should work with the selection itself, as well as with the m (movement hotkey) move the selected canvas somewhere else on the canvas functionality.

So you can translate right now, but not rotate and scale.

A round about way to get there right now would be to use the new V5 File : Export : Export Selected Canvas as Image menu command. The selected part of the canvas gets written out as an image file.

This new feature was added at the request of users who wanted a super easy way to make image brushes from things they hand painted on the canvas.

Once you have your image file of the selected canvas, you can make an image brush out of it by running the  File : Paint Synthesizer : New Image Brush menu command. I would suggest initing the paint synthesizer before running this command so that you can start from a know initialized set of paint synth parameters.

So then you could build a paint preset that just paints a single nib. And you could adjust the size in Brush Modulation.

Or you could make a region fill as brush preset. So then you could lasso the part of the canvas you wanted to dump your selected canvas image brush into, and it would autosize accordingly.

    • thanks again john, the imagebrush-thing sounds best to me and gives me the idea to build up an arsenal of "brushs" with my figuration. question: is there an initialized default "template"-preset for building up imagebrushs?

      • We should definitely add a macro edit command for it to the paint synth macro edits.

        So, if you:

        1: Init the paint synth (shift click the Init button at the bottom of the Editor);

2: Run File : Paint Synthesizer : New Image Brush ... menu command. Open your custom image for the image brush.

that would seem to get you to a good starting point.

        • "export selected canvas" gives me a rectangle, not the wished lasso-selection. the whole thing with the "imagebrush-method" is a bit laborious to me, so if necessary my handy workaround is: I open my unfinished canvas in affintyPhoto, do my lasso-selection, copy, paste, move and scale. this take me less then 2 minutes. then bring it back to SA, continue and finishing my painting. normally I do all my digital artwork in 100% SA.

          • If you save your image in PNG format it should have an alpha channel in it. You can't use jpeg, because it doesn't support an alpha channel. I've definitely used it that way, it was kind of the whole point to adding the feature. I'm in the middle of an intensive code build, but when that is done later i'll run some tests to verify it works.

            • Works fine for me. Make sure you pick the PNG output option in the save dialog.

Is anybody making a copy of all the material in the Tutorials Forum

Since the Forum is going away in June, has anyone started to make a copy of all the stuff in the Tutorials forum?I've made copies of some of the tutorial material on the main site, but haven't looked at the Tutorial Forum yet.I'm going to continue copying as much as I can for my own personal use anyway, but if anyone else is doing it, or has already started doing it, please let me know.Maybe we can co-ordinate our efforts. ps can't ..... believe John, would let this happen without so much as a…

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor
