Selection Keyframing Question

Bouts of unemployment can be  a boon for one's Studio Artist education, I have to admit.

Okay, I've been playing around with creating animated split screens that continually shift around the screen and in one instance I'd like to have multiple selections available at the same time. Below you can see the output of what I'd like the selection to look like.

I tried using the SHIFT key when drawing the new selection, but on playback of the PASeq, the only thing that would show was the last selection I'd drawn in the series.

Now, I'm realizing that something like this will probably require the use of several PASeq steps to accomplish, but I'm tossing out the question for the sake of curiousity.  Is it possible to keyframe multiple selections in one PASeq step when the previous keyframe had only one selection?

Thank you as always!

  • I just tried building a PASeq in 4.03 using multiple selections, where every selection after the first was generated by holding down the shift key to extend the existing selection. It works fine for me.

I noticed you have Masking turned on. If you want the status of the mask associated with each action step to playback when the PASeq plays back, then you need to turn on the Mask Playback option for the PASeq preset.

    • Hey John,

The SHIFT + draw selection works fine for me.  I'm able to add a selection to an existing selection, my challenge has been doing it and having it captured as part of a single PASeq.

Let me walk you through my workflow.

      1. turn on the PASeq record button

      2. turn on the canvas -> selection -> set to -> full off

      3. bring up the region selection editor, set the selection type to rectangle

      4. draw a single rectangle selection

      5. turn on the Sequence KeyFrame button

      6. click on the keyframe for frame 10.  It turns blue

7, SHIFT + Draw a new region selection with the rectangle box adjacent to the box I previously drew

      8. erase the canvas to source image

9, turn off the PASeq record button

Since reading your last post, I made step #1 turning on the mask playback in the PASeq editor, however the result seems to interpolate between the first box I drew and the second rather than draw both of them.  To achieve the effect I was looking for I took to drawing the second region selection as a second action step.

If you're able to do it without the interpolation behavior occurring, I'm probably missing something.

      • If you're using sequential keyframe recording, you're recording a new keyframe. Two selection keyframes in the same action step at different frame times will interpolate.

Here's my PASeq i just made as a test. 2 rectangular selection, the second one was made with the shift key held down.

I then turned on sequential keyframe recording, and did a select and then shift select action at keyframe 10. Both rectangles interpolate across the 10 frames, and the second one shift adds to the existing seleciton for all 10 frames.

So it all works like you would expect when i try it in 4.03.  Were you trying to shift add the 2nd keyframe to one selection action step? That's not going to work. You'd have to split it out into 2 different action steps.

        • Okay, that's the confirmation I was looking for.  Thanks John!

Is anybody making a copy of all the material in the Tutorials Forum

Studio Artist is in Italy!

I was crawling the streets of Matera, Italy today and may have discovered where SA is hiding!  (see attached photo). Not meaning to make light of this great, sad mystery. But I just couldn't resist as I try to make sense of what's happening. Losing my connection to SA, Synthetik and John has been a great sadness... and if real, ends a monumental era in my creative life. love,~Victor
