do session files contain embedded paths to the images? if so this may be why I have some issues since I have updated some drives, renamed others to simplify workflows.

Layer images contained in a session file are embedded in the actual session file. As opposed to being references to other external files.
That may change at some point if we move to a session folder implementation as opposed to a session file one like we currently have.
that is what I thought, after a few mishaps on my drives I am working on using common names to keep paths okay.
