textures in MSG

i have been using the 'linden' textures within MSG - msg - users - surface textures - linden. i am trying to create a small image with heavy surface texture ..then enlarge the item and use a PASQ to paint the item on a larger scale ...while maintaining the same relative heavy texture as the small original..the MSG process doesnt seem to scale the texture operation..is there any way of doing this?

  • The ISEFBlurFilter processors aren't resolution independent. The AdvTurb processor is. So the trick would be to use something different to take the AdvTurb texture field and generate the surface texture effect from that generated texture field.

The FSA filter processors are resolution independent. Here's a different approach that does scale.

The new preset is attached below. You could probably do a similar modification to the other linden surface texture presets in that user folder.

    surfaceEx1.zip

    • thanks...will give it a go
  • John's answer is the better way. But not the only way.. ( is there ever an "only way" in SA)

The Linden textures were always meant as a introduction and jumping off point for people to explore what might be possible in adding background textures. The reason I choose the MSG vs the texture synthesizer was to illustrate a method which didn't rely on tiling to fill the page. So resolution independence was the goal. If you open the MSG editor you will note the 3rd parameter down in the AdvTurb operation is ScaleSp. You could adjust this parameter to get a larger spatial distribution, which on a larger canvas would be the same as a smaller scale on the smaller canvas. At one time I thought about setting the tg on this parameter to "user slider" then the preset would be user adjustable. You could try that.

Ultimately it simply might be easier/more flexible to use the imop preset I posted a few weeks ago. That one uses the gradient lighting imop to transfer the texture from one layer to another. With this the possibilities of texture choice are limitless. One can do a "paper" but also brush strokes, raindrops, crinkled celophane, reptile skin, an edge sketch, you name it....

So while I do believe that the Linden textures are cool as in intro and useful for what they are, they are certainly much more of a "one trick pony."

glad you are having fun with them.

John also posted a very helpful tiling preset. Anyone interested in making self-tiling textures should take a look at that.
    • thanks, looks like more stuff to learn!...i tried adjusting like you say ..the ScaleSP...sorry to be dumb here but which parameters need adjusting to scale up the texture?...i have tried various permutations on the coarse canvas preset and failed...is it just trial and error?
      • with the msg as your active operation open the msg advanced editor. In the PChain (processing chain) window you will notice AdvTurb is the second operation. Select that and then over in the editor window, select ScaleSp. The parameter value of this operation determines the spatial scale of the texture.
The original value of the preset is 1.05. I am attaching a jeg showing the operation of the original value, one with the value set at 2.05 and one with the value set at 5.05. All these were done on the same size canvas.

and a screen shot of the parameters

        • thanks Mike..will experiment further
        • note that values less than one will not make the pattern any tighter.. and as a side note.. yes explore all the parameters in this operation you will find some very interesting differences.
