As far as generating pre-rendered clips to use for VJ purposes, there's an infinite amount of different effects you could create with Studio Artist. Especially using keyframed or self animating MSG processors.
I have a friend here who is building a software video mixer for me that is just plain amazing.
It can advantageously replace, on a single laptop, most of the gear I normally use in my live performances, usually two, even four computers and two DVD players (none if using four computers), connected to an Edirol V-4 (or 440HD as in last March's performance here in Esbjerg), itself connected to a digital projector.
Have a look at that supermixer in action.
This is a quick demo done from bits of my work online. Imagine four clips, one in each corner, the mouse mixes them by moving in the window, and this with incredible speed. The interface has already changed drastically since this demo was filmed 3 days ago. Bruno Herbelin, the brillant engineer building this, is developing it under Linux now. I have just installed Parallels and Linux (Mandriva) on an Intel Mac in order to participate in that development. The end "product" will be Mac as well as PC compatible.
Studio Artist 4 is fabulous at supporting that kind of work, those looking forward to it have good reasons to do so.
Here's a video of a collective improvisation I took part in last September, the single screen session was absolutely memorizing.
Studio Artist not only enables me to paint live, it also can record that painting-in-time (PASeq with sequential keyframing) and render it as well, enabling me to bring into the mix not only the doing of the QT movie, but the QT movie as well.
