source gradient controls

Hey all! I've been trying to incorporate the use of gradients into some of my work and I'm having a devil of a time getting the hang of it. Perhaps you can all help. The initial problem I am having is with the controls used to create a gradient. I'm fine with using the eyedropper to select the color that I want. Where I'm running into trouble is applying colors to the gradient. How do I: a) apply colors to the entire gradient so that any artifacts at the beginning or end are removed; b) get a softer transition between colors on the gradient; and c) reset the gradient to its default state? Oh, and also, is it possible to create a transparency in the gradient?

In 3.5, when you option click in the gradient to record a new color you can move the vertical position of the cursor prior to releasing the mouse to interactively control the transition. You can also use the c and b hot keys after the fact to adjust the transition and the index positions.
